How does Pregnancy happen?

In some cases, the blockage may occur that will prevent the egg from traveling down the tube. Blocked fallopian tubes are the cause of infertility in 30-40% of infertile women.

Different Types of Tubal Blockage

Two types of blockage can happen. In some cases only one fallopian tube gets blocked, women can still get pregnant because an egg can still travel through the normal fallopian tube. Note: If both tubes are completely blocked, fertility without treatment won’t be possible.

How to Detect Blocked Fallopian Tubes?

Usually, women with blocked tubes do not experience any symptoms. Blocked fallopian tubes can be diagnosed by:

• Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) – a special type of x-ray taken after inserting dye into your uterus.
• Sonosalpingogram or on
• Laparoscopy
• Hysterosalpingogram (Hsg) Film
• Dye Test on Laparoscopy

Sometimes on Hysterosalpingogram, the dye does not go past the uterus and into the tube, and the blockage appears to be right where the fallopian tube and the uterus meet. If this happens then a diagnostic laparoscopy may be needed to confirm.

Here are a few ways to get pregnant with blocked tubes.

1. Laparoscopic Surgery for blocked fallopian tubes: In some cases, infertility can only be diagnosed through this type of surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery can in some cases open the blocked tubes, remove the scar tissue and allow you to get pregnant naturally or with the help of treatment, however, the procedure does not work in 100% of the cases as other factors are at play including your age, the location, and cause of the blockage.

If just a few adhesions are present between the tubes and ovaries, then your chances of getting pregnant after surgery are good. The risk of ectopic pregnancy is higher after surgery to treat tubal blockage.

2. Tubal Ligation Reversal: Many times women get tubal ligation done as a permanent method of contraception but due to certain reasons need to restore their fertility.

During the procedure, the blocked segments of the tubes are reconnected. The chances of success are greater if a large portion of healthy fallopian tubes is remaining.

3. IVF for blocked fallopian tubes: IVF makes getting pregnant possible if repair surgery did not work or in some cases where tubal surgery is not an option (cases where there is a concomitant severe male factor, advancing maternal age serious problem with ovulation).

During IVF treatment women are given fertility drugs to stimulate ovaries and then the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using an ultrasound-guided needle. Once eggs are retrieved they are fertilized in the lab to make embryos which are then transferred back into the uterus thus IVF treatment completely bypasses blocked fallopian tubes and blockages don’t matter.
